Smart Magnetic Technology Project led by Lu Qiang wins Gold Medal of Main Track Session of the 5th College Students' ‘Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
From October 12 to 15, 2019, the 5th College Students' ‘Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition was held in Zhejiang University. The project entitled ‘Smart Magnetic Technology-magnetic force drives the transformation of surgical technology’ led by Lu Qiang, Doctoral Student from Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery andSurgical Dreamworksof the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), won Gold Medal of Main Track Session for the first time. Sun Chunlan, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, was invited to attend the championship competition and participated in the "Maker Show".
Under the guidance of Professor Lyu Yi and Professor Wu Rongqian, the ‘Smart Magnetic Technology-magnetic force drives the transformation of surgical technology’ project was headed by Doctoral Student Lu Qiang. The team members consisted of Dr. Wang Shanpei from Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Doctoral Student Liu Kang, Postgraduate Student Chen Bowen, Zhang Wei and Li Tao, Dr. Zhang Hongke from Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, Yu Jiawei, undergraduate student from Medical Health Center, Chai Yunyun, Liu Xiao and He Ziyue, undergraduates from School of Economics and Finance of XJTU, Li Hanzhi and Shi Qingyun, postgraduate students from School of Electrical Engineering of XJTU and Yang Yumeng, postgraduate student from School of Management of XJTU.
This project is designed to resolve many difficulties and bottlenecks encountered in the development of modern surgery, which utilizes the "non-contact effect" between magnetic materials and innovatively applies magnetic force into surgical technologies. Through this project, several core technologies have been mastered for surgical application of rare earth NdFeB magnetic materials. Research and development have been performed regarding the application of rare earth NdFeB materials in surgery and their surface treatment interventions to clarify the relationship between magnetic force and tissue biological effect. This project has pioneered multiple magnetic surgical technologies around the globe. On this basis, a series of magnetic surgical instruments and equipment have been developed. Taking the digestive tract magnetic stapler as an example, it revolutionizes the mode of lumen anastomosis, overcomes the defects of traditional lumen anastomosis, such as complicated procedures and high-risk postoperative complications, and significantly shortens the anastomosis time. Besides, the incidence of severe postoperative complications including biliary fistula and pancreatic fistula can be remarkably declined. A series of products have been successfully applied in clinical practice.
In recent years, our hospital has taken active measures in response to the establishment of ‘1234’ ecological system for practice teaching and innovative entrepreneurship proposed by XJTU, which represents ‘one goal, two principles, three tasks and four measures’ and accumulates valuable experience for student cultivation. All these efforts contribute to the gold medal in this national competition.
A total of 4,093 colleges and universities from 124 countries and regions participated in the competition, with a total number of 4.57 million participants and 1.097 million projects. The number of both projects and participants is almost the sum of those of the previous four competitions. Sixty-four gold medals are selected for the Main Track Session of the final competition (award rate of less than 1/10,000).
